After lockdown in 2020, I weighed 126 Kg. The heaviest I have ever been. I was living on takeaways and Woolworths ready meals. I drank too much, was on antidepressants, cholesterol and blood pressure medication and did absolutely no exercise.
By early 2022, I had tried every fad diet and quick-fix exercise programme. Nothing worked. I would lose a few kilos, but the weight would come straight back the second I stopped.
In early 2022, I got a fat fright (pun intended); at my annual checkup with my physician, the worst thing he said to me was, ‘Wow, you are fat!’. We ran blood tests and I was called back to see him to discuss the results. I was petrified.
I had a fatty liver, sky-high cholesterol, worryingly high blood pressure, and my testosterone levels were extremely low. The only plan of action was to make drastic life changes.
I googled personal trainers and sent emails to a whole bunch. Glen from Unique Physique got back to me straight away. Actually, he was the only one who got back to me.
We set up an evaluation appointment in May 2022, and I must admit I went to see him with much trepidation. Walking into a gym full of lean, toned guys is extremely intimidating, especially if you are overweight and extremely self-conscious. But I sat with Glen, and we discussed my health issues and my reluctance to do cross-fit style training. Glens’ knowledge of nutrition, health and exercise really impressed me, and after a short discussion, I was “sold”. Glen sent through an eating plan that made sense and is easy to follow. My training plan was 3 x 20-minute sessions a week of weight training. The first day of training, I went cold turkey on the antidepressants as well.
After a few weeks of following the eating plan and going to the gym, I started seeing results. And then more results and even more results. The eating plan was easy to follow and adapt when needed; the 20-minute session flew by because Glen chatted with you the entire time. He doesn’t count your reps; he actually engages with you, and your session is over before you know it.
Fast forward to 2024, I am still off the antidepressants, my cholesterol is in range, I am off blood pressure medication, and my liver readings are all perfect.
In two short years, I have lost 31 kilograms and gained a mountain of strength and self-confidence. My physical and mental health have never been better; I don’t turn to food when I am stressed anymore. I have control over cravings and binging.
As of yesterday, 05 August 2024, I weigh 95 kg.
